Recycling For Money - Bottles and Cans Make Dollars and Sense
By A. Daily
After you’ve finished draining that Snapple bottle, or chugging that Rock Star at lunch, don’t throw the used containers in the trash. Not only are you helping to save the environment, many states are offering incentive programs or cold, hard cash for your used beverage containers.
For example, in California they actually charge an extra, refundable fee when you buy most beverages. 100% fruit juice, milk, and some of the other healthier drinks are exempt from this “tax”, but the majority of popular containers qualify for the CRV (California Redemption Value), which has recently increased to 5 cents for containers less than 24 oz. and 10 cents for the larger ones.
If you are on the east coast, there is a program called RecycleBank that offers incentives for recycling. After contacting them, they provide you with a special container that tracks your recycling contributions. These contributions give you reward points, which can give you discounts or even free stuff from lots of participating retailers. Bed, Bath and Beyond, Petco, and Foot locker are all part of RecycleBank’s reward programs, just to name a few.
Finding extra bottles and cans around the neighborhood is easy. It is illegal to remove items from trash bins in many areas (so I’m not suggesting a midnight raid on your neighbors discards!) but many people are too busy or just don’t care enough to bother recycling. Offer to take such things off their hands on a weekly basis if they’ll just keep a separate stash.
Also, things like ink toners and even grocery bags can put pennies back in your pocketbook. Office Depot gives 3$ per used toner cartridges, and many grocery stores offer a small break from the bill when you bring in your or re-use your own bags.
As more and more people wake up to the fact that our planet needs to be cared for, more businesses are finding way to reward people for recycling. Don’t overlook this easy way to score a few extra bucks.
